Charlie Longo, Jr. for Director of Political Affairs
Hello College Democrats of Maine,
February 10, 2007, on the steps of the old Illinois capital building, the place where Abraham Lincoln started political career, Barack Obama formally announced his candidacy for President of the United States. Exactly one year later, my political career started at Maine’s Democratic Presidential Caucus. Because I was a college student there were complications with my voting eligibility and in the United States I had to fight for my constitutional right to cast a ballot. This race was important to me, and there was no way I would be taken advantage of. After awhile, the town clerk decided to give in and I officially became a member of the Democratic Party.
After a few months of paying my dues and building a reputation as a hard worker, I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse. A man named Ronnie Cho; Maine’s Campaign Field Director offered me a position as a Organizer for the Obama Campaign for Change. The next day I quit my job and took a leave of absence from school and changed my life forever. During the four months I served on the campaign, worked in Washington County and Northern Cumberland County covering roughly 3,500 square miles. Some of my best experiences were working with students from the University of Maine Machias and Bowdoin College; I could not have done it without their support.
While I was working on the campaign, I started to hear about a new leader in the Democratic Party. Ben Goodman went to Denver as a National Delegate, was elected to the MDP Executive Committee, and was a student at the University of Maine. When it comes to politics, Ben Goodman’s name is synonymous with success. I trust he will be one of the most successful College Democrats President in awhile.
I am again asking for your help to elect the full Goodman-Cosgrove-O'Heir ticket, including me as Director of Political Affairs. With your help, the change we made in 2008 will only be the beginning of a very bright future.
Sincerely,
Charlie Longo Jr
