Kat Cosgrove for Vice President

Hello Maine College Dems!

What an exciting time to be Democrats! With Mr. Obama in the White House, and a majority in the Senate, this country can finally start repairing the massive amounts of damage that we have suffered over the past eight years. I truly believe that even college students, way up in the seemingly remote state of Maine, can have a very positive impact in the changes that are coming. This is why I’m absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as a Vice President of the Maine College Democrats. With the right amount of enthusiasm and leadership, we can take the momentum from Barack Obama’s amazing presidential campaign (and presidency!), and channel it into a successful gubernatorial campaign in Maine in 2010. I personally would love to see a Democratic governor succeed Governor Baldacci (a feat that hasn’t been achieved since 1850!). I don’t see this as a daunting task; I see this as an opportunity for us to help make history yet again in the Democratic Party.

In terms of experience, where can I begin? I have been a Democrat since I was in utero. I remember being in 7th grade and voting in the mock election for the 2000 Presidential race. I, along with many other people, was disappointed when Al Gore won, but was not allowed to take up residency in the White House. I became particularly active in politics when Barack Obama announced his candidacy. Everything he said seemed to resonate with everything I felt. Being a member of the Colby Democrats, I helped to phone bank during Mr. Obama’s campaign, as well as during the campaigns of Sharon Libby Jones, Kate Smith and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree. At the Waterville caucus in February of 2008, I was selected to be a delegate to the Maine Democratic Convention, and was honored to be able to cast my vote for Mr. Obama there.

For my junior year, I had made plans to study abroad in Switzerland, which would seem to indicate a forced hiatus from activity with the Democrats. This was not an appealing prospect, so I began interning with Democrats Abroad. I helped organize fundraisers, reminded ex-pats to request their absentee ballots, and joined roughly 500 Americans, waiting up until 8 a.m. on November 5th, to see CNN’s projection that Barack Obama was our new president. I wanted to bring my experience abroad back to Colby, so I ran, and was elected, as Vice President of the Colby Democrats for the 2009-2010 academic year. Additionally, I am spending my summer interning with the Maine Democratic Party in Augusta, alongside Ben Goodman, and we are gaining experience that will be extremely useful for the coming year. I can’t wait to work with all of you to make this year an exciting and successful one!
